Lying in Church

Filed under: America,Christianity — kcillini77 @ 9:37 pm

I wholeheartedly support the change in worship style that is prevalent now in churches.  Replacing the organ with guitars and drums is a welcome change, in my opinion.  But I often struggle with the lyrics of many of the worship songs that grace our churches.    Today we sang a song that included these words:

I will give You all my worship;I will give You all my praise;You alone I long to worship;
You alone are worthy of my praise

Really?  This morning I was distracted by the fact that my son and wife were sick at home.  This week I gave more praise and worship to the Illini basketball team than I did to God.  Yet here I am singing about how I put God before all else.

Another song said,

We stand and lift up our hands;For the joy of the Lord is our strength;We bow down and worship Him now;How great, how awesome is He

Really?  I saw one person in the church lifting up their hands. None of us were bowing down.  That’s not to say that we need to be doing those things in order to worship.  But we’re not a charismatic church.  We don’t do these things – that’s not what we’re used to.  So why are we singing that we are?

If you ever see me in church not singing – it’s not because I don’t love my Lord and Savior. It’s because I don’t want to lie to Him.  Do you?

  1. I’m smiling as I read this, because I went through the same thing few years ago, and still do now and then.
    I guess it just bothered me how unauthentic our worship could be and how it can turn into just a religious sing-a-long.

    I wanted to puke sometimes, because of the lack of sincerity.

    However, I’ve found freedom to do whatever in worship recently.
    It is the “I don’t care what form we worship” worship. 🙂
    Really liberating knowing that you can create new ways of worshiping Him.

    Laters!

  2. I think that by concerning yourself with the welfare of your family you are worshiping God. You are using the heart that he gave you. Worship doesn’t have to be all about jumping up and down shouting “Hallelujah!” Even though that’s fine too if the Spirit leads you that way. Worship is about giving yourself to God in every situation. There’s a verse somewhere in Colossians that says something to the effect that we are to do everything as we would do it unto God. That means working, loving our family and dealing with strangers on the street as if we were in the presence of God (since we really are). It’s how mindful (perhaps Spirit-filled is a better term) we are of him. We can choose to either be in his presence or not. Thanks for the post. And be blessed, brother.

  3. I think it is awsome that churches are getting rid of organs and moving to guitars and bands. Its 2007! You are right, sometimes the lyrics are a problem. But overall the change is long overdue.
